I present to you: Anton Suhanov Pharos, a table clock with triple axis tourbillon
Today I will tell you about a very complicated table timepiece that if I owned it I would spend hours and hours observing it. Since it was made by an independent watchmaker, it is one of those works that comes from a thought, from a dream, and such and such becomes reality.
Pharos is the first work of Anton Suhanov, an independent watchmaker from St. Petersburg whose pendulum I had already presented the Clock ClockIth Triple A TourIs Tourbillon with which he won “Theo
Who is Anton Suhanov?
A young mechanical engineer who did not immediately begin to operate in the field. At the end of his studies in 2007, Anton met Konstantin Chaykin– a world — famous independent Russian watchmaker-who hired him as a collaborator.
After ten years of experience, in which we must count the success of four years ago in Basel, and having worked since 2018 as production director always at Chaykin.
The Pharos triaxial tourbillon
As you can see, the shape recalls that of a lighthouse but Suhanov says he was inspired in particular by the famous island of Pharos positioned in front of the port of Alexandria of Egypt and built around 300 BC considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
For millennia lighthouses have represented the form of architecture that stands on the borders of water and land. Even with the presence of a navigation system the sighting of its light in the distance is always a source of great tranquility. And that's why the Russian watchmaker wanted Pharos to be extremely bright.
In order to faithfully interpret a lighthouse, Suhanov had to revise the concepts that guided the mechanical movements he had made so far.
For this watch the Russian has developed a special escapement and a rocker wheel with luminous inserts. When the rocker oscillates the light bands merge into a single ring of flickering light visible in the dark that symbolizes the flicker of the rays of light or, as was the case in the ancient lighthouses, of the flames of the fire.
But the independent watchmaker of St. Petersburg was not content with giving light to Pharos; he wanted that beam to be visible not only from the front but from whatever position the observer was in.
So he decided to equip his table clock with a three-axis tourbillon or triple a tour
What is a triple axle tourbillon?
First of all, watchmaking excellence.
Invented in the 80s by Richard Good, the first watchmaker to create one inside a travel pendulum, the triaxial tourbillon is a tourbillon whose cage makes three rotations on as many axes that rotate at a different speed. It was first included in a wristwatch by the independent watchmaker Thomas Prescher who presented it in 2003 in Basel Tril Orld in the famous Trilog collezione collection, a set of three watches consisting of a flying tourbillon, a double tourbillon, and precisely the legendary Triple A Tour
Feature
The Pharos casing is made of steel and measures 190 mm (height)x 86 mm x The movement consists of 420 elements and the triaxial tourbillon rests on 11 ball bearings. To make a complete evolution the inner cage takes 33.75 seconds, the middle one 60 and the outer one takes 180.
Opinion
By the way Anton Suhanov Pharos is also an hour of the world.
On the outside of the dome under which the triaxial tourbillon mechanisms and the special wheel with four SuperLuminova inserts move are the names of 24 cities combined with their respective GMT spindles with their respective numbers above. The seconds are displayed on the vertical wheels.
Hours and minutes are readable in a small dial below, and the power reserve is indicated lower by a lever that moves vertically. It costs escluse 32,000 excluding taxes that in the end do not seem many for the level of the work. Visit the website anton-suhanov.com and leave your impressions in a comment.
